Benedict Song (1798-1867)
Benedict Song was born in Seochon, Chungju, Chungcheong-do to a noble family. He became a Catholic at a young age. He taught the catechism to his family and formed a community of faith. They all practiced the teaching of the Church faithfully.
Benedict Song‘s family moved to the Baeti Christian Village in Jincheon (now, Yangbaek-ri, Baekgok-myeon, Jincheon-gun, Chungbuk) to practice their religious life in greater freedom. He enjoyed a peaceful Christian life with the faithful. In the spring of 1867, one year after the Byeongin Persecution broke out, the police from Seoul, who were searching for Catholics, raided the Baeti Christian village and arrested Benedict Song and his family.
They were taken to the Jincheon government office and transferred to Seoul by way of Juksan, Gyeonggi-do. Five family members were arrested including Benedict Song who was the oldest, his son Peter, Peter`s daughter, Peter`s daughter-in-law Anna Yi and her child.
They were martyred in Seoul in 1867 after professing their faith in God with conviction. Benedict Song was 69 years old.
